Unit 5 Course Topics:

  1. Ministry Skills: If only there were a perfect formula for how to do prayer ministry! Unfortunately, one size does not fit all. Certain ministry skills will be common to most sessions, but every heart is unique and needs to be met in its own unique way. Although learning ministry skills is valuable, we need to learn first how to read the heart. Then learn to combine ministry skills and heart messages into the one-of-a-kind approach each personal session deserves.

  2. Shame Pt 1: Shame affects us in our individual lives, our families, our churches, our generations and cultures. Shame causes us to build walls of protection around our hearts, and causes us to hide from God and from man. Even as He pursued Adam and Eve in the garden, so our heavenly Father pursues us daily, crying, “Son, Daughter, where are you?” For many of us bound in shame, our response to our Father’s loving cry is the same as Adam’s, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because of my nakedness, so I hid.”

  3. Shame Pt 2: We need to recognise what shame does and the many symptoms associated with it. In ministry, it is important to know how to discern the fruit of shame and even some of the obstacles that may block healing. To effectively bring healing to those bound by shame, it is important to recognise that prayer ministers must consciously and patiently build a relationship of trust with the individual receiving ministry.

  4. Emotional Abuse: In His Word, God provides us with healthy and appropriate forms of discipline necessary to raising children. These guidelines are examined at length in this lesson and contrasted with the damaging behaviours of emotionally abusive parents, whose arbitrary and inconsistent responses destroy the natural sense of justice God supplies to our spirits.

  5. Addictions: Although most of us think of drugs and alcohol when we hear the word “addiction”, we are a people prone to various substitutes for the love, comfort and healing that we seek. This teaching explores the broader subject of addiction from an inner healing point of view, and offers understanding of the roots which underlie every addiction.

  6. Healing Life’s Common Sexual Experiences: We often over-react, or under-react, to the sexual behaviours of our children. All sins are not equal; Jesus made a clear distinction between greater and lesser sin. If handled improperly without understanding, the common sexual experiences of childhood and adolescence can wound deeply and lead to greater sins in adulthood.
